Introduction to the OLE at JALT 2011 Compendium

On this compendium

OLE, the Other Languages Educators Special Interest Group in JALT, the Japanese Association for Language Teaching, may arguably claim to be the biggest organization and have the most presentations of any Japanese institution concerned with the instruction of multiple foreign languages. This booklet offers all freely visible material that was presented in the OLE presentations at JALT 2011 on November 19-20 at the National Olympic Youth Center in Yoyogi, Tokyo. With its sheer amount and span of areas, approaches, languages and research topics covered at least in part, this is a small “compendium” of presentations in cross-linguistic learning and teaching contexts in Japan.

The role of OLE in JALT

Note that OLE is not meant to interfere with individual language teaching organizations. They are vital to demonstrate that foreign languages other than English are strong enough individually in Japan. OLE is meant to give these organizations additional clout as a second force in the large overarching language teacher association that is JALT with its over 2000 members. JALT and OLE are very well on their way to become one, if not the first, address to contact if multiple foreign languages are concerned.

OLE at JALT 2011

This introduction gives a brief overview of the events related to OLE at JALT 2011, all of whom are represented, in one way or other, in the following pages

Numbers

This year saw a slight reduction in presentations and events.

All in all we had 23 presentations by 23 presenters in 7 events:

-3 presentations in the multilingualism forum by Profs.Maybin, Hunke and Reinelt

-3 presentations by Profs. Lauffenburger, Koike and Fortin in Le Forum de Francais

-3 presentations in the Spanish workshop by Profs. Silva, Fernandez and Kasutani

-6 presentations in the OLE SIG forum by Profs. Fortin, Schmidt, Miyauchi for Mary Glasgow, Batten, Hoshino and Reinelt

-5 presentations in the German workshop by Profs. Krause-Ono, Voegel, Imig, Harting, and Reinelt

-2 presentations in the Embassy Panel: FL Teaching in the 21st century: Republic of Ghana Ambassador H. E. Dr. Mensah Brandful and Dr. Holger Finken, the Director of the German Academic Exchange Service in Tokyo. All of these were directly organized by OLE.

-There was also one independent presentation by Prof. Zamborlin.

The back side

Admittedly, there were also two no-shows and this issue will have to be addressed in the future.

4

Still available materials

For the last four years, OLE has been using one room throughout the conference almost exclusively for its presentations and networking. This year we also had a huge number of up-to-date materials, some of which are still available from the coordinator at reinelt.rudolf.my@ehime-u.ac.jp for free.

Elections

OLE also held elections at its annual general meeting. All officers had to step down due to re-election restrictions. In the ensuing election, each of the former officers was proposed as a new candidate and then elected.

On issuing this compendium

At the conference itself, we have been gathering the presenters’ presentations and materials and this is the second year the presentation materials are made public in this form. Materials appear as they were made available by the presenters. As for copyright, all material is only free for information. If in doubt about using it for educational purposes or research, please contact the presenters directly or via this coordinator. As everything appears online, we gratefully acknowledge the support of the Education and Student Support Center’s Education Department at Ehime University for OLE at JALT.

... and on to OLE in 2011

This booklet also contains a brief schedule of OLE-related events in 2012. With JALT 2012 in Hamamatsu already on October 12-15, most deadlines are (very) early, in February, March and April. The JALT 2012 deadline is Friday April 13, 2012, see also < http://jalt.org/conference>.

More detailed information on the events will be made available in OLE NL 62, to be issued in Mid-February, and subsequent issues, but also keep a constant look on the calendar on the JALT homepage. OLE is a sponsor of PAnSIG and JaltCALL, so please also consider presenting there. For any event, please apply early as vacancies fill up fast.

We hope that this compendium is another helpful service to everyone in OLE and beyond.

Your coordinator,

Rudolf Reinelt
